Christian Wiklund dropped an e-mail to Marc Andreessen this past February, asking to meet with the Internet legend-turned-venture capitalist and pick his brain. The pair had met briefly in 2009, as Wiklund was still in the early stages of launching Skout, a mobile app for flirting and chatting, and he wanted to know what Andreessen thought of his progress.

Following the example set by philanthropists like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, the venture capitalists at Andreessen Horowitz have made a joint pledge to donate at least half of their substantial incomes to charity.

The firm’s six general partners all made the commitment, announced today in a blog post by founding partner Marc Andreessen. It’s a public promise to “donate at least half of all income from our venture capital careers to philanthropic causes during our lifetimes.” That includes income from salaries, investments, and the “carry” that each partner collects as a share of the firm’s profit from its funds.

If some venture capitalists have issues with the brazen style of the 34-month-old, Sand Hill Road firm Andreessen Horowitz, just wait. The firm’s six GPs have just committed to dedicate half their venture income to charity, and they’re very intentionally going public with the decision.

It’s a move that no one other venture firm or private equity firm has made to date.

In a big philanthropic statement, venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz said its six general partners intend to donate at least half of all their lifetime venture-capital earnings to charity.

To kick off that move, Marc Andreessen, a founder of the firm, said he and the five other general partners at Andreessen Horowitz—Ben Horowitz, Jeff Jordan, John O’Farrell, Scott Weiss and Peter Levine—will immediately donate $1 million across six Silicon Valley-related non-profits. Those non-profits include the Second Harvest Food Bank, which aims to alleviate hunger, and The Shelter Network, which is tackling the issue of homelessness.
