Connecting
the Future

The a16z College Talent Network partners with current undergraduate and graduate software engineering students to help them reach their professional goals. We work with universities around the country to identify students who are talented and passionate about tech–and who we think will excel in a startup environment. Students who are accepted into the network will have access to our College Talent Network team and resources, which includes mentorship, advice, and a connected community of students, founders, and more. Once you’re in the Collect Talent Network, our broader Talent Network team is your entry point to working with a16z throughout all stages of your career–from intern to executive.

We’re always looking to grow our network. Keep reading to learn about program requirements and how you can apply.

Student Experiences

The best way to get a glimpse into the College Talent Network is to hear about it directly from our participants. Here’s what they have to say:

The a16z [College] Talent Network was the most helpful part of my recruiting experience. The team was hands on, offering me resume and interview advice as I prepared for the recruiting cycle. They took the time to get to know me and understand what I was looking for in my next role. They regularly checked in to see how my search was going and helped get me connected with teams until I found a position. I really appreciated their hands on support throughout the process.

The a16z College Talent Network cares about your career more than just connecting you to job opportunities. My [a16z talent partner] has helped me figure out my career goals during college, review my resume, talk through tradeoffs with different offers, check in during my current job, give me the opportunity to speak at a16z recruiting events, as well as attend other a16z events.

FAQ

  • What are the requirements to become a member?

The program is open to junior and senior, master’s, and Ph.D. students who are majoring in computer science or similar fields. Strong software development, project management, and/or design skills are table stakes. Great grades are a plus, but we look beyond the GPA and look for a certain scrappiness that will excel in a startup environment.

  • Do we place our members within a16z?

No. We are not recruiters for a16z or our portfolio companies. If you’d like to apply for a position within a16z, you can view available opportunities by visiting https://jobs.a16z.com/jobs.

  • How do you handle referrals?

We love referrals! If you think someone you know would be a great fit, please email us their information at collegetalent@a16z.com.

  • How is this different from a fellowship?

Unlike other networks or fellowship programs, our College Talent program is a partnership that takes a long-term approach to career development. We get to know our participants over time, and offer advice and recommendations to help get them where they want to go. We don’t do placements and, once our students are accepted, we will be available as a resource as they move through every stage of their career.

  • Where can I find out more about the firm?

Visit our Connect page to learn more about upcoming events and sign up for our newsletters.

  • When is the College Talent Team on campus?

Our team visits campuses during the fall and the spring.

  • What does the network do for me once I’m in?

Once you’re part of the network, you’ll have access to our team, resources, and expertise as well as a wider community of students who are interested in the tech startup space. Our team will be here to mentor you, offer guidance as you navigate career decisions, help you with your resume, or even get your pitch deck into the right hands at a16z if you’ve got a great idea for a startup. You’ll also be invited to our events, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet other students, founders, portfolio company members, and more.

  • I’m interested in a hackathon sponsorship. How can I submit my event for consideration?

You can email us your event information at collegetalent@a16z.com. We will review and, if accepted, we will follow up.

  • I’m interested in working with one of your portfolio companies, but I don’t fit the program requirements. How can I apply?

You can view all available positions across the a16z portfolio at https://jobs.a16z.com/jobs.

  • I’m a college student who is thinking about starting a company. Would you review my pitch deck?

We are happy to review and potentially pass your pitch deck along to the right team at a16z. You can send your pitch deck along with your name, university, major, and anticipated graduation date to our collegetalent@a16z.com email address. Please note that this opportunity is only for college students. Unsolicited pitch decks will not be considered.

  • When did the College Talent Network start?

The College Talent Network has been here since the inception of a16z in 2009.
