The first “SOF Truth” is that humans are more important than hardware.
It is a deceptively simple idea, and one that matters enormously for the next generation of defense technology companies. The point of better technology is not to replace the human mission. It is to make the mission more effective, more survivable, and more decisive.
That is why this moment is so important. Autonomous aircraft can fly ahead of manned fighters. Software can compress critical decision cycles from hours to seconds. New sensing, manufacturing, energy, and AI systems can give commanders better options, faster. The best defense technology is not technology for its own sake; it is technology that helps people accomplish missions that matter – and come home safely.
We believe the United States needs a new generation of companies building for exactly this moment. Military strength, technological superiority, industrial capacity, and the ability to move quickly from invention to deployment are now central to deterrence. The founders building in this category need more than capital. They need strategic guidance from people who understand the mission, the customer, the institution, and the stakes.
That is why I am honored to welcome General Bryan Fenton as a Special Advisor to the a16z American Dynamism practice.
General Fenton is one of the most accomplished military leaders of his generation. A career Special Forces officer, he served as the 13th Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, overseeing the global special operations enterprise across the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Before leading USSOCOM, he commanded Joint Special Operations Command and served as Senior Military Assistant to two Secretaries of Defense. Across 38 years of service, he led at every level, across multiple theaters, and through some of the most complex operational environments in the world.
Bryan brings together the two ideas that sit at the center of American Dynamism: deep respect for the people who serve and a clear-eyed understanding that technology can help the country move faster, fight smarter, and save lives. He understands how decisions are made, how capabilities get fielded, and what it takes for new technology to matter in the real world.
At a16z, Bryan will advise our American Dynamism team and support founders building across defense, national security, and government-related sectors. He will help us think through emerging technologies and capabilities, the evolving needs of the defense industrial base, the realities of government adoption, and the strategic questions that come with building companies whose customers include the most important institutions in the country.
We are honored to have General Bryan Fenton join a16z as a Special Advisor to American Dynamism, and excited for the work ahead.
