About

Alex Oliver is a technologist, analyst and defense strategist. As a partner at Andreessen Horowitz he focuses on supporting founders building technology in aerospace and national security.

Before joining a16z, Alex spent 15 years as an active duty U.S. Army officer in both Infantry and Military Intelligence career fields, with operational assignments supporting Special Operations and the Intelligence Community and combat deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout West Africa.

Alex served as a Program Manager at the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), where he ran the maritime autonomy portfolio — overseeing multiple successful prototype contracts that transitioned autonomous systems to the Navy and Marine Corps. He was subsequently selected for a fellowship inside a top Silicon Valley venture capital firm, an experience that crystallized his conviction that the most consequential national security challenges of our era will be solved by commercial innovation. In his last active duty assignment, Alex served as an advisor on technology and innovation to the U.S. Special Operations Command leadership.

Alex is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal and Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He holds the Army Staff & Office of the Secretary of War Identification Badges and is Airborne and Air Assault qualified. He earned a BA, with distinction, in International Relations from Virginia Military Institute, an MA in International Relations from American University, and an MS in Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University. Alex is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

He resides in Virginia with his family.
